Neurodegenerative Disorders

The brain and spinal cord, which comprise the central nervous system (CNS), are complex neural structures. As we age, CNS disorders are more common as processes in our body begin to deteriorate. The occurrence of CNS disorders, also known as neurodegenerative diseases, is increasing daily as people are living longer. Such crippling diseases include Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), all of which are more and more prevalent and incredibly difficult to live with. 

According to a World Health Organization global study, 8 out of 10 disorders in the 3 highest disability classes are neurodegenerative diseases (site source). In 2016, there were 9 million deaths from these diseases in the United States alone, and worldwide over 276 million people became disabled from them (site source). The population of people facing neurogenerative diseases will continue to grow as the average life expectancy becomes longer. 

What problems do patients face?

All diseases have a strong inflammatory component to them. In a normally functioning body, the immune system is responsible for fighting off pathogens by initiating an inflammatory response. However, in a body with neurodegenerative disease, the inflammatory response overpowers and injures the central nervous system. The immune system infiltrates the CNS, destroying tissue and causing significant damage. This damage is usually irreversible due to the limited healing responses in the CNS.

Current studies suggest that the central nervous system has a relatively limited ability to recover^[4,5] with many pathological conditions still untreatable or not efficiently managed by standard medical care^[6]. While advances in medicine are allowing us to extend our life expectancy, there are currently no cures for neurodegenerative diseases and minimal solutions to the progression of these diseases. 

What is the solution?

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) show remarkable potential as an alternative therapeutic for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, MSCs may secrete supporting growth factors, including cytokines, for neural healing and repair.
